Elderpark Library
Elderpark
This library was built by Lady Elder and gifted to the city in 1903. Situated in its own park (Elder Park), it  is, in some ways, the most beautiful library building in the city. It was intended to provide access to learning and scholarship to the workers of the nearby Govan shipyards and perfectly fits with the Glasgow tradition of the autodidact. One of the original conditions of the gift was that it should be open on a Sunday. It does not open on a Sunday now, but here we see one of the Saturday nightshift finishing his book and waiting for the library to open on a blazing Sunday morning.
This painting can currently be viewed at the Park Gallery, 697 Pollokshaws Road.
