I am working on a picture which explores the conflict between innocence and learning, and the awakening and revolution brought about by knowledge. I am looking the dichotomy of the sacred and profane using imaginings engendered by Milton's Paradise Lost. The picture is set around the dome of the grandiose Mitchell Library in my native city.
The central figure represents Minerva, presently a large victorian statue perched on the dome. In my picture she flies from her position on top of the dome. Despite this, she is confronted by the half monarch butterfly figure of Satan and is compelled to look up at him from behind her veil.
All around her the place of learning is in turmoil as the fallen angels literally create pandemonium.
